Android Auto gets Gemini: Rolling out now in Japan

Key Points of This Article
  • It appears that the integration of “Gemini” into “Android Auto” has finally been released in Japan.
  • I confirmed that “Google Assistant” has switched to “Gemini” in my car (Solio + Sony XAV-AX8000).
  • At this moment, it is not yet possible to start the intuitive conversation service “Gemini Live.”

Six months have passed since Google announced the integration of its AI “Gemini” into “Android Auto” in November 2025.

It seems that the rollout of “Gemini” for “Android Auto” has finally reached Japan and Japanese-language environments. In early May 2026, I confirmed that “Google Assistant” had transitioned to “Gemini” in my own vehicle (Solio + Sony XAV-AX8000).

Note that the system requirements for using “Gemini” on “Android Auto” require the Android device to be running Android 11 or later with at least 2GB of RAM. With “Gemini” integrated into “Android Auto,” users can enjoy more natural conversational instructions and operations, such as getting optimized navigation routes, finding gas stations along the way, or summarizing and replying to incoming messages (SMS/email).

However, my personal impression after giving it a quick try is that while it now allows for more natural conversation, the basic functionality remains largely unchanged from the original “Google Assistant.”

Although the “Gemini” integration for “Android Auto” has been enabled in Japan, I was unable to start the intuitive conversation service “Gemini Live” at this time. Even after saying, “OK Google, let’s talk,” it replied, “Sure, let’s talk,” but then closed the “Gemini” interface.

It is likely that “Gemini Live” is not yet supported for “Android Auto” in the Japanese locale.
