Android Chrome Officially Rolls Out Approximate Location Permission

Key Points of This Article
  • Google has announced the rollout of the “Approximate Location” permission as a new feature for the Android version of the Chrome app.
  • This feature allows the Android Chrome app to access only the user’s approximate geographic region.
  • It enhances user privacy when accessing services like local weather or news that do not require precise location data.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026 (local time), Google announced the rollout of the “Approximate Location” permission as a new feature for its Android browser app, “Chrome.”

As the name suggests, the new “Approximate Location” permission allows the Android Chrome app to receive only a general area of the user’s location. Previously, whenever location permissions were enabled in the Android Chrome app, the system provided “Precise Location” by default. Now, users can keep location permissions enabled while turning off the “Precise Location” setting, allowing the app to receive only an “Approximate Location” instead.

This adjustment enhances user privacy for tasks that do not require exact coordinates, such as accessing local weather updates or regional news. However, even when the “Approximate Location” permission is active, users can still temporarily enable “Precise Location” if they need to access specific features, such as navigation services.

While this has now been formally announced as a new feature for the Android Chrome app, the rollout was actually confirmed as early as October 2025. The reason for the official announcement at this time remains unclear.

The “Approximate Location” permission is also scheduled to be rolled out to the desktop version of Chrome in the future.
