- Google announces global language support for “Preferred Sources,” including Japanese.
- “Preferred Sources” is a registration feature for news-related web media, similar to the “Following” feature in Google News.
- When a website (media) registered by a user as a “Preferred Source” publishes news articles or content, they are prioritized in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results.
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, Google announced that “Preferred Sources“—which officially launched in the US and India on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, and subsequently expanded globally for English-language environments on Tuesday, December 16, 2025—is now available in all languages, including Japanese.
While “Preferred Sources” has previously been limited to English environments, this rollout brings support to all languages in regions where Google Search is available, finally making the feature accessible in Japan and for the Japanese language.

“Preferred Sources” is a registration feature for news-related web media, similar to the “Following” feature in Google News. When a website (media) registered by a user as a “Preferred Source” publishes news articles or content, these will be prioritized in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results.
In other words, articles published by the web media outlets that a user trusts are more likely to appear prominently in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search.

To register a media outlet as a “Preferred Source,” users can click the “Preferred Sources” icon on the right side of the “Top Stories” section when performing a news-related search, and enter the URL of their favorite media. Furthermore, web media outlets can encourage readers to register by using the link format: “https://google.com/preferences/source?q=(site URL)” (e.g., registering for “Preferred Sources”).
There is no limit to the number of media outlets a user can register as a “Preferred Source.” We will continue to provide useful information to everyone, and we would be very happy if you could register our site as one of your “Preferred Sources.”
