On Wednesday, April 29, 2026 (local time), the Google video service “YouTube” announced that it will make its Picture-in-Picture (PiP) video playback feature available to all users worldwide for free within the coming months.

The “Picture-in-Picture” feature on YouTube allows users to watch videos in a floating mini-player. This enables you to continue watching YouTube videos in the mini-player while browsing for other videos on the platform or while using other apps.

Previously, YouTube’s “Picture-in-Picture” feature was limited to “YouTube Premium” members or general users in the United States. With this update, the feature is being expanded, allowing general users everywhere to take advantage of PiP functionality.

Please note that the free version of this “Picture-in-Picture” feature will only apply to long-form videos and excludes “YouTube Music” content. Additionally, it will be available for the YouTube app on Android and iOS.

You can also turn off the “Picture-in-Picture” feature via the settings menu. The PiP settings are located within the “General” playback options in the YouTube app for Android and iOS.
