On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Google announced the introduction of a new image generation feature for its Google AI “Gemini” app, powered by the “Nano Banana 2” model, which integrates “Google Photos” with “Personal Intelligence.”

The Gemini app has previously supported image generation using the “Nano Banana 2” model and has been capable of accessing and importing images stored in the online photo library service, Google Photos.

Recently, the Gemini app also introduced “Personal Intelligence,” a personal AI assistant that provides users with highly personalized information, anticipating their needs before they even ask.

However, the newly announced feature—which merges Google Photos with Personal Intelligence—eliminates the need to manually fetch images. By simply entering a prompt, the Personal Intelligence-enabled Gemini app automatically selects the most relevant photos from your Google Photos library and uses “Nano Banana 2” to generate the final image. You can even specify people or pets by their “Face Group” labels set within Google Photos, allowing you to use those labels directly in your prompts to guide the image generation process.

This new feature also analyzes your hobbies and lifestyle preferences from Google services enabled in the Gemini app’s “Extensions” settings, such as Google Photos and Google Search. This allows the app to generate images that match your personal taste even from vague or general instructions. If the photos Gemini automatically selects do not match your intent, you can still manually upload images or choose specific photos from Google Photos. A “Sources” button has also been included, allowing you to verify exactly which photos Gemini referenced for the generation.

The new image generation feature powered by “Nano Banana 2,” which integrates Google Photos and Personal Intelligence, will begin rolling out to “Google AI Ultra,” “Google AI Pro,” and “Google AI Plus” members in the United States within the next few days. Availability for the desktop version of Chrome and a broader rollout to more users are also planned. Please note that this feature is strictly opt-in.
