- Google announces that Google Workspace accounts can now use home sharing features in “Google Home.”
- Smart home sharing is now supported for Google Workspace accounts.
- This update is intended for use with custom domains managed by individuals or families.
On Thursday, April 2, 2026, Google announced that it has lifted restrictions on home sharing features for Google Workspace accounts within the “Google Home” smart home service.
Previously, Google Workspace accounts were restricted from using sharing features in the Google Home app, such as inviting other users to a home or accepting invitations to join an existing home. This meant that users had to set up separate personal Gmail accounts to share smart home device controls with family members, which was a significant inconvenience.
With this update, these restrictions have been removed for users who primarily utilize Google Workspace accounts, significantly improving convenience. Smart home sharing is now officially supported for Google Workspace accounts.
For example, if you have built a smart home using a custom family domain like “@smithfamily.com,” you were previously unable to invite family members with the same domain or those with personal Gmail accounts to your home. Moving forward, you can invite users with appropriate access levels and share the management of your smart home devices.
Users who have been continuing to use older Nest accounts created before 2019 can now migrate those accounts directly to their preferred Google Workspace accounts. Furthermore, users can now perform the initial setup for devices such as the “Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen)” and “Nest Doorbell (3rd Gen)” directly within the Google Home app using their Google Workspace accounts.
Additionally, new management features are being introduced for Google Workspace administrators. Administrators will now be able to flexibly manage or restrict access to Google Home across the entire organization, specific departments, or designated groups.
Please note that this expansion of home sharing for Google Workspace accounts in Google Home is intended for use with custom domains managed by individuals or families. It is not intended for use with Google Workspace accounts associated with workplaces or schools.
Furthermore, please be aware that “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” and certain “Google Assistant” features remain unavailable for Google Workspace accounts at this time.
