Key Points of This Article
  • Google has announced the expansion of the “Live Translate” feature, powered by the Google AI “Gemini (Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio),” in the Android Google Translate app to more regions and the iOS app.
  • The feature is now expanding as a beta to many countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, the UK, and Japan.
  • Availability has also been expanded to the iOS version of the Google Translate app.

On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Google announced the expansion of its “Live Translate” feature for the Google Translate app—powered by the Google AI “Gemini (Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio)”—to more regions and to iOS devices. This feature originally launched as a beta in the US, Mexico, and India on Friday, December 12, 2025.

The “Live Translate” feature in the Google Translate app, built on “Gemini,” translates what the person you are talking to is saying while preserving their tone, emphasis, and intonation, playing the translated audio through headphones or speakers connected to your Android device. You can choose to output the translated audio through the device speaker or connected headphones.

This headphone-compatible, “Gemini”-powered “Live Translate” feature has now expanded as a beta to many countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, the UK, and Japan. Additionally, as originally announced, the rollout has extended to the iOS version of the Google Translate app.

While the headphone-compatible, “Gemini”-powered “Live Translate” initially used the “Gemini 2.5 Flash Native Audio” model, it has been upgraded to the next-generation voice-first AI model “Gemini 3.1 Flash Live” to coincide with this expansion.
