Google Messages Officially Rolls Out “@mentions”

Key Points of This Article
  • Google has officially rolled out the “@mention” feature for “Google Messages,” the SMS/MMS/RCS messaging client app for Android.
  • Similar to the “@mention” feature in “Google Chat,” users can now tag specific individuals in group chats by typing “@xxx” to direct messages to them.
  • This feature is available within “RCS” group chats.

On Friday, March 20, 2026, Google officially began rolling out the “@mention” feature as a new addition to the Android SMS/MMS/RCS messaging client app, “Google Messages.”

The “@mention” feature in the Google Messages app functions similarly to the one found in Google Chat. When you want to send a message to a specific user within a group chat, you can simply type “@xxx” to direct your message to them. Messages sent via “@mention” trigger a notification for the recipient, making it a convenient way to ensure that specific users are alerted to your message within a busy group chat.

Please note that the “@mention” feature in the Google Messages app is available for use within “RCS” group chats.

For context, the existence of the “@mention” feature in the Google Messages app was first discovered in late January 2026 through app teardown analysis of the app’s resource code. It was subsequently announced as part of the “New Android Features” for March 2026 on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Now, the feature has finally begun its official rollout.
