On Friday, March 20, 2026, Google officially announced the release of a new “Trash” folder feature for “Google Messages,” its default SMS/MMS/RCS messaging app for Android.
The existence of a “Trash” folder in the Android “Google Messages” app was first discovered in the app’s resource code around October 2025. It was subsequently rolled out as a beta feature between late February and early March 2026 for those enrolled in the beta tester program. Now, it has finally been announced as an official feature rollout.
The “Trash” folder is currently being rolled out in stages for the Android “Google Messages” app.

Previously, when a message (or thread) sent or received in the “Google Messages” app was deleted, the data was permanently removed and could not be recovered. With the introduction of the new “Trash” folder, deleted messages will now be moved to the folder temporarily instead of being immediately erased.
Messages stored in the “Trash” folder will be automatically deleted after 30 days. Of course, you can manually delete them before the automatic deletion period, and you can also restore messages that are still residing in the “Trash” folder.
Please note that for “Android Go” devices, messages are automatically deleted after 7 days instead of 30. Additionally, if you receive a new message in a thread that has been moved to the “Trash,” a new thread will be created.
