On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Google released the latest official “What’s new in Google Home” update, highlighting the new features and improvements being rolled out for the Google Home smart home ecosystem.

This update includes a wide range of improvements: the expansion of “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” across Canada with Canadian French support; faster performance and Canadian French support for “Gemini Live” translation mode; a reduction in smart home command latency by up to 40%; enhanced management of alarms, timers, and calendars; the expansion of “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” to regions including Japan; and new “Automation” features in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Home app.

“Gemini for Home (Early Access)”

The latest update brings the expansion of “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” to all of Canada, adds Canadian French support, improves “Gemini Live” translation speed, introduces advanced alarm and timer controls, and expands “Gemini for Home (Early Access)” to several new countries, including Japan.

New Language Support

“Gemini for Home (Early Access)” is now available throughout Canada, with official support for Canadian French.

Additionally, the “Gemini Live” translation mode, available for “Google Home Premium” members, has received a significant boost in response time. The translation mode now supports 30 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.

To use the “Gemini Live” translation mode, you can simply say commands like, “OK Google, be my Spanish interpreter.”

Latency Improvements and More

Smart home operations via voice commands with “Gemini for Home” are now up to 40% faster. Furthermore, the system is better at detecting local weather units and providing more relevant regional news.

When requesting tasks such as setting alarms, timers, notes, or calendar events, the system will now provide responses via the screen rather than just voice, allowing for a more streamlined experience that keeps you focused on your work.

Improved “Alarm,” “Timer,” and “Calendar” Controls

Gemini’s alarm and timer management has been refined to handle more complex voice commands, such as: “Set an alarm for when the sports game starts,” “When does the timer start? How much time is left?”, “Cancel the timer and set a new one,” “Wake me up at 7 AM on weekdays,” or “Snooze the alarm until 10 AM.”

Calendar functionality has also been enhanced, allowing for more complex scheduling, such as creating an event and then saying, “Create the same event for next week.”

Google Home App

“Gemini for Home (Early Access)” in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Home app is finally expanding to new regions, including Japan.

Expansion of “Gemini for Home (Early Access)”

“Gemini for Home (Early Access),” which includes features like “Ask Home,” “Home Brief,” and “Help me create,” was initially available only in the US and Canada. It is now expanding to a total of 14 countries, including Japan.

The countries now included are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Japan. Note that some features may require a “Google Home Premium” membership.

New “Automation” Features

New “starter,” “condition,” and “action” options are being introduced for automations within the Android and iOS versions of the Google Home app.

While these new options can be set manually through the automation settings, they are also scheduled to be integrated into “Ask Home” and “Help me create” in the future.

■ New Starters and Conditions
・ Oven status: “Running,” “Stopped,” “Paused,” “Error” (e.g., “If the oven is running”)
■ New Actions:
・ Local weather forecast via voice assistant: “Tell me tomorrow’s weather”
・ Smart light wake-up mode: “Start the wake-up light effect in the bedroom at 7 AM”
・ Smart light blink mode: “Blink the living room lights for 1 minute”
・ Smart light sleep mode: “Start the sleep light effect in the nursery for 10 minutes”
