Google Pixel Watch 2/3/4 Express Pay: Advanced Motion Algorithms Detect Activity

Key Points of This Article
  • Google has released details on the new “Express Pay” feature, introduced in the March 2026 software update for the Google Pixel Watch 3 series.
  • This is essentially an expansion of the existing “Express Pay” functionality.
  • By enabling the setting in advance, users can make in-store payments simply by tapping their Google Pixel Watch without needing to unlock the device.

On Monday, March 16, 2026, Google released details regarding the new “Express Pay” feature, which was launched as part of the March 2026 software update for the second-generation “Google Pixel Watch 2,” third-generation “Google Pixel Watch 3,” and fourth-generation “Google Pixel Watch 4” series.

While “Express Pay” is a new feature for the Google Pixel Watch series, it is technically an expansion of the existing “Express Pay” capability. Previously, “Express Pay” (specifically for transit) allowed users to tap their watch at NFC-enabled credit card transit terminals to pay without needing to perform additional actions.

Following the March 2026 software update, this “Express Pay” functionality has been extended to include in-store tap-to-pay transactions. By enabling this setting beforehand, you can make payments at retail stores simply by tapping your Google Pixel Watch, without the need to manually unlock the device.

This is made possible by advanced motion algorithms that detect the user’s arm movement when tapping the watch to a terminal, triggering the “Express Pay” process.

Conversely, if a payment is attempted via “Express Pay” without the system detecting the appropriate motion, a security feature will trigger, requiring the user to confirm the payment on the watch display. Note that a prerequisite for using “Express Pay” is that the Google Pixel Watch must have been unlocked at least once within the last 24 hours.

Please note that for the Japanese versions of the Google Pixel Watch series equipped with FeliCa, the “Express Pay” feature is not applicable to “Suica,” “PASMO,” “iD,” or “QUICPay.” “Express Pay” is exclusively a feature for NFC payments made using registered credit cards. In this regard, FeliCa-based services like “Suica,” “PASMO,” “iD,” and “QUICPay” remain the more convenient options.
