- A “Quick Settings tile” for the Google Pixel music recognition feature “Now Playing” was introduced around mid-March 2026.
- Users can now trigger music recognition via “Now Playing” directly from the “Quick Settings” panel.
- The feature likely appeared following the “Android System Intelligence” app update (version B.22.881782647) released on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
About 10 days ago, on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Google began rolling out the March 2026 monthly software update (“Android 16 QPR3”) to 21 Google Pixel models—including the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8, 8 Pro, 8a, 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, 9a, 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, and 10a—which includes regular security fixes and feature enhancements. Alongside this, they launched a wealth of new features as part of the March 2026 “Pixel Drop.”
The March 2026 “Pixel Drop” consists of 21 new features in total. One of these is the release of “Now Playing” as a standalone app, which was previously an OS-level music recognition feature. Historically, the “Now Playing” function was managed by “Android System Intelligence,” a system component app that handles advanced control features across Android. However, with the transition to a standalone “Now Playing” app, the system has evolved into one where both the “Android System Intelligence” app and the “Now Playing” app work in tandem.
While the shift to a standalone app makes things more intuitive and easier to operate for users, it has also resulted in a somewhat complex internal architecture.
Following this transition to a standalone app, a “Quick Settings tile” for “Now Playing” was introduced around mid-March 2026. By adding “Now Playing” to your “Quick Settings,” you can automatically identify music playing in your surroundings directly from the panel.
Additionally, you can now manually trigger “Now Playing” music recognition from the “Quick Settings tile.” While it was previously possible to trigger “Now Playing” from the lock screen, this new addition allows you to start the recognition process from the “Quick Settings” menu, similar to the “Music Search” feature linked to the Google app.

It is worth noting that the “Quick Settings tile” for “Now Playing” was not available when the app was first released as a standalone utility. Its sudden arrival is expected to have occurred after the “Android System Intelligence” app update (B.22.881782647) released on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. It’s a bit complicated.
