On Thursday, March 12, 2026, Google officially announced “Ask Maps,” a feature that integrates the company’s Gemini AI into the Google Maps service.
“Ask Maps” had previously been rumored under names like “Gemini Mode,” but it is now being officially launched as “Ask Maps.” It is rolling out initially in the US and India for the Android and iOS versions of the Google Maps app, with a rollout for the desktop version expected in the near future.
Ask Maps
“Ask Maps,” the Gemini-integrated feature for Google Maps, allows users to find locations based on complex criteria through natural conversation with Gemini.
By tapping the “Ask Maps” button located at the bottom left of the Google Maps search bar, users can ask complex questions such as, “Are there any places where I can charge my phone while having coffee without waiting in a long line?” or “Are there any public tennis courts with lighting open tonight?” and Ask Maps will immediately identify spots that meet those requirements. For questions like, “I’m planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes—are there any recommended spots to stop by along the way?” it can provide not just directions, but also insider details gleaned from reviews and search data, such as estimated arrival times, hidden hiking trails, or how to obtain free admission tickets.
Furthermore, Ask Maps suggests personalized spots by taking into account the user’s past search history and saved locations. Users can also complete actions like booking a restaurant, saving a list, sharing with friends, or starting navigation with just a few taps.
Ask Maps is rolling out first in the US and India on the Android and iOS versions of the Google Maps app, with a release for the desktop version scheduled for the near future.
