On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Google announced “Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite,” the most cost-effective and fastest lightweight AI model within the Google Gemini 3 series.
“Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite” is being offered to developers as a preview version, “Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite (Preview),” on the multimodal generative AI development platform Google AI Studio and the machine learning development platform Vertex AI. Availability as an AI model within the “Gemini” app has not yet been announced.
“Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite” is a lightweight, high-performance AI model that outperforms the previous generation, “Gemini 2.5 Flash,” in reasoning capabilities. It even includes a “Thinking levels” feature that allows the AI model to automatically adjust its depth of thought based on the complexity of the task.
Despite its capabilities, it comes with a low-cost pricing structure: $0.25 per 1 million input tokens and $1.50 per 1 million output tokens for text, images, and video. For comparison, the previous generation “Gemini 2.5 Flash” costs $0.30 per 1 million input tokens and $2.50 per 1 million output tokens. Furthermore, when comparing response times, “Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite” delivers the first response 2.5 times faster than “Gemini 2.5 Flash” and offers a 45% improvement in output speed.
With its combination of low pricing, a lightweight yet high-performance architecture, and blazing-fast response times, “Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite” is well-suited for tasks such as large-scale document translation, text editing, UI generation, and bulk image analysis or tagging.
