Google Messages Trash Folder Rollout

Key Points of This Article
  • The “Trash” folder feature for the Android “Google Messages” app has finally begun rolling out between late February and early March 2026.
  • Deleted messages are now temporarily stored in the “Trash” folder instead of being immediately removed.
  • At this stage, it appears to be a beta rollout for the “Google Messages” app for those registered as “Beta Testers.”

Around October 2025, we introduced the “Trash” folder as a new feature coming to “Google Messages,” the default SMS / MMS / RCS messaging client for Android.

That “Trash” folder feature for the Android “Google Messages” app has finally started rolling out from late February to early March 2026.

Previously, in the “Google Messages” app, deleting a received message meant the data was permanently deleted and could not be recovered. However, with the rollout of the new “Trash” folder, deleted messages are now temporarily stored in this folder first.

Messages moved to the “Trash” folder are automatically deleted after 30 days. Of course, it is also possible to delete them manually before the automatic deletion occurs.

Note that the “Trash” folder feature for the Android “Google Messages” app currently seems to be rolling out to a limited number of Android devices. Among the devices I own, I have only been able to confirm the rollout on the “Pixel 10.”

Furthermore, as you can see, the “Trash” folder feature in the Android “Google Messages” app is still in an incomplete state, with Japanese localization being only partially implemented. It is likely a beta rollout for users registered as “Beta Testers” of the Google Messages app.
