Google Pixel Now Playing Standalone App Released

Key Points of This Article
  • The “Now Playing” standalone app has finally arrived on the Google Play Store.
  • The icon and UI have been refreshed.
  • Currently, it appears to be installable only on Google Pixel devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program and running Android 17 Beta.

Previously, we reported on the possibility of a standalone version of “Now Playing”—the Google Pixel feature that identifies songs playing nearby and displays them on the lock screen. Now, the standalone “Now Playing” app has finally appeared on the Google Play Store.

The “Now Playing” app is brand new, having just been listed on the Google Play Store on Monday, March 2, 2026. As you can see, the “Now Playing” icon has been redesigned. For reference, the initial app version is v2026.03.02.877359875.0-release.

Additionally, screenshots available on the “Now Playing” app page in the Google Play Store confirm that the UI will also be refreshed.

However, it appears that the “Now Playing” app can currently only be installed on Google Pixel devices that are enrolled in the Android Beta Program and running Android 17 Beta. In other words, it is still in a beta-like state at this stage.

It may be officially released to the public around the March 2026 “Pixel Drop,” the feature update for Google Pixel devices.
