On Thursday, February 19, 2026, Google released its 2025 safety measures report for its content store, “Google Play.”

As AI continues to evolve, malicious actors are also reportedly leveraging AI to make their tactics more sophisticated. However, Google is countering this by investing in its own AI-powered defense systems and real-time protection features, enhancing the safety of the Android platform and the entire Google Play ecosystem.

First, as a frontline defense for Google Play, Google integrated generative AI models into its app review process. This has enabled the app review team to identify complex and malicious patterns more quickly, resulting in the prevention of over 1.75 million policy-violating apps from being published. Furthermore, they successfully suspended more than 80,000 malicious developer accounts attempting to distribute harmful apps and blocked over 250,000 apps that requested unnecessary access to sensitive data. They also blocked 160 million spam reviews that undermine the trust of both users and developers.

Google’s efforts to improve ecosystem-wide safety extend beyond Google Play to the strengthening of “Google Play Protect,” Android’s built-in protection feature. Scanning over 350 billion apps daily, Google Play Protect also successfully identified more than 27 million new malicious apps attempting to be installed from external sources. Additionally, advanced anti-fraud features, which have been expanded to 185 markets, have blocked 266 million high-risk installation attempts.

A particularly noteworthy new feature is an anti-fraud function that prevents security settings from being disabled during a call. With the introduction of this feature, a mechanism is in place to ensure that users are not deceived by scam calls into disabling their security settings while on the phone.

Behind these user protection efforts, support systems for developers have also been expanded. By providing features such as real-time policy violation warnings within “Android Studio” and strengthening APIs to prevent device spoofing, Google has created an environment where developers can more easily build secure apps. Furthermore, by promoting developer identity verification, they are narrowing the opportunities for malicious actors to develop apps anonymously.

From 2026 onward, Google plans to continue its investment in AI-driven defense systems and its collaboration with developers, aiming to maintain its position as the world’s most trusted ecosystem.
