Google Maps Anonymous Reviews: Official Launch in Japan

Key Points of This Article
  • Google Japan has officially announced the launch of “Anonymous Reviews,” a new feature for Google Maps.
  • When posting reviews for locations on Google Maps, users can now set a specific nickname and profile picture for their reviews.
  • Even with anonymity, reviews remain linked to the user’s Google account; therefore, any misconduct, such as suspicious or fake reviews, will result in penalties against the original Google account.

On Monday, February 16, 2026, Google Japan officially announced the rollout of “Anonymous Reviews” as a new feature for the Google Maps service.

The “Anonymous Reviews” feature for Google Maps is the same as the one announced by Google global in November 2025. When posting a review for a location on Google Maps, users will now be able to set a dedicated nickname and profile picture for their reviews.

While “Anonymous Reviews” is a useful feature for those who prefer not to post under their real name, it remains linked to the user’s Google account. Consequently, if any fraudulent activity such as suspicious or fake reviews is detected, penalties will be applied to the original Google account.
