Android Auto: Google Messages Japanese Summaries Now Available

Key Points of This Article
  • The AI summary feature for “Android Auto,” which was likely initially introduced only in English environments, has finally been released for Japanese language environments.
  • It is unclear exactly when it was released for Japanese.
  • For now, you should be able to use it as long as you have the latest versions of the “Android Auto” app and “Google Play services” app.

Exactly two years ago, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, Google announced the introduction of AI summary features for incoming messages in “Google Messages,” “Google Chat,” and other apps on the “Android Auto” car operating system.

Two years have passed since then. It appears that the AI summary feature for “Android Auto,” which was likely limited to English environments at first, has finally been unlocked for Japanese. However, since the AI summary feature is designed to request approval for summarization only when a message of 40 words or more is received for the first time, it is possible that it was available in Japanese much earlier and I simply hadn’t received a message long enough to trigger it until now.

In any case, as long as you have the latest versions of the “Android Auto” app and the “Google Play services” app, you should be able to use the “Android Auto” AI summary feature.

The AI summary feature for “Android Auto” uses Google’s AI “Gemini” to provide easy-to-understand summaries of incoming messages and read them aloud. In practice, tapping the “Summarize” button that appears when a message is received will trigger the summary to be read out.

Additionally, by tapping “Play Original,” you can still have the original message read aloud as before.
