On Monday, December 15, 2025, Google made a surprise announcement that it would terminate its security feature, the “Dark Web Report,” on Thursday, January 15, 2026. This feature monitors the “dark web”—an online environment where illegal information is often distributed and difficult to access through standard means—for leaks of personal information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and personal identification numbers.
Today, Thursday, January 15, 2026, the “Dark Web Report” service finally comes to an end. However, as it is likely based on US time, it is expected to remain accessible for a while until the following day, Friday, January 16, 2026.
The “Dark Web Report” was initially launched for paid Google One members in the US and began its global rollout, including Japan, around mid-August 2023. Later, around early September 2024, it was made free and available to all general Google users.
The reason Google is ending the “Dark Web Report” is that it has “failed to provide effective solutions.” While the tool was helpful in identifying personal information leaked on the dark web, it frequently received feedback that it was essentially a meaningless tool because it only identified the leaks without providing any further actionable steps, leading to the decision to discontinue it.
Monitoring for the “Dark Web Report” will cease today, Thursday, January 15, 2026. Furthermore, one month later, on Monday, February 16, 2026, the “Dark Web Report” tool and all data accumulated so far will become inaccessible. This means that by February 16, 2026, Google’s related services for the “Dark Web Report” will be completely terminated.
Google stated that even after the “Dark Web Report” service ends, it will “focus on providing clear and actionable solutions for protecting personal information online.”
