- Google has revealed the discontinuation of the “Gemini” side panel, currently in general release, alongside the rollout of “AI Inbox” in Gmail.
- This is part of an initiative to integrate new inline AI features into Gmail, including “AI Overviews,” the existing “Help Me Write,” and the “Suggested Reply” feature, which offers Gemini 3-based AI response suggestions based on email context.
- The rollout will initially begin for members of the “Google AI Pro” and “Google AI Ultra” Google AI subscription plans under Google One in the United States.
On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Google announced “AI Inbox” as one of the new features for its “Gmail” email service, powered by Google AI “Gemini 3.”
The new Gmail feature, “AI Inbox,” uses AI to summarize and display the contents of the inbox, such as highlighting tasks. It identifies important people and prioritizes them by inferring relationships through email communication with frequent contacts or those registered in your “Contacts,” presenting summaries and key points within the “AI Inbox.” Another key feature is that highly important content, such as bills due tomorrow or dentist appointment reminders, is displayed with top priority.
The “AI Inbox” feature has begun rolling out to trusted testers and is scheduled for a general release within the next few months.
Alongside the rollout of “AI Inbox,” Google revealed on its official “Gmail Help” site that it will be discontinuing the “Gemini” side panel currently in general release. The discontinuation of the “Gemini” side panel is part of an initiative to make new inline AI features—such as “AI Overviews” and “Suggested Reply” (Gemini 3-based context-aware AI response suggestions), in addition to the existing “Help Me Write”—available directly within Gmail.
The deployment of “AI Inbox” and the phase-out of the “Gemini” side panel appear to be starting with members of the “Google AI Pro” and “Google AI Ultra” Google AI subscription plans under “Google One” in the United States.
