On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Google announced “AI Inbox,” a new feature for its Gmail email service powered by the Google AI “Gemini 3.”
The new Gmail feature “AI Inbox” uses AI to summarize and display the contents of your inbox, including highlighting tasks. It infers relationships from your interactions with frequent correspondents and people registered in your “Contacts,” identifying and prioritizing important individuals while displaying summaries and key points directly within the “AI Inbox.”
A key characteristic of “AI Inbox” is that it prioritizes particularly important content, such as invoices due tomorrow or dentist appointment reminders. Crucially, “AI Inbox” is implemented securely with privacy protections in place, ensuring that users remain in control of their own data.
The new “AI Inbox” feature for Gmail is beginning to roll out to trusted testers. It is scheduled for a general release within the coming months.
