On Thursday, December 11, 2025, Google began rolling out a new URL (chat.google.com) for the web version of Google Chat, its chat service within the Google Workspace suite.
Until now, the URL for the web version of Google Chat was hosted on a subdirectory of the Gmail domain (mail.google.com/chat). It will now be rolled out on a new subdomain (chat.google.com).
However, redirects will be in place from the old subdirectory URL (mail.google.com/chat) to the new subdomain URL (chat.google.com), so users who have the old URL bookmarked can still access the web version of Google Chat. That said, at the time of this writing, accessing the new subdomain URL (chat.google.com) still redirects back to the old subdirectory URL (mail.google.com/chat).
Incidentally, this is not just a URL change; the new subdomain URL (chat.google.com) is reported to be faster, with improvements such as reduced loading times when launching the app.
