On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Google announced the expansion of “Preferred Sources,” a feature that officially launched in the U.S. and India on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

“Preferred Sources” is a feature similar to following on Google News, where news articles and content from websites (media) that a user registers as a favorite will be prioritized in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search results. In other words, articles from media outlets that the user trusts are more likely to be prominently displayed in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search.

To add a media outlet as a “Preferred Source,” users can click the “Preferred Sources” icon to the right of the “Top Stories” section that appears after a news-related search, and then enter the URL of their favorite media to register it. Additionally, media outlets can encourage readers to register them as a “Preferred Source” using a link formatted as “https://google.com/preferences/source?q=(site URL)”. There is no limit to the number of media outlets that can be registered as “Preferred Sources.”

“Preferred Sources” was initially rolled out for testing as part of the new project testing program, “Google Labs,” starting on Thursday, June 26, 2025, before its official launch in the U.S. and India in August 2025.

And “Preferred Sources” will soon be rolled out to English-speaking users worldwide. Support for more languages is also planned for early 2026.

Incidentally, media outlets registered as a “Preferred Source” reportedly see an average of a twofold increase in clicks. I’m looking forward to its rollout in Japan / for the Japanese language.
