First Update in Two Years: Chromecast (2nd Gen), Ultra, and Audio Receive 2025 Firmware

Key Points of This Article

  • Google has surprisingly released a new firmware update sometime in 2025 for its largely forgotten streaming devices: Chromecast (2nd Gen), Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast Audio.
  • The updates for each device only include bug fixes and improvements.
  • This is the first firmware update for these devices since the one released about two years ago on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.

It appears that a new firmware update was rolled out sometime in 2025 for the Google streaming devices Chromecast (2nd Gen), Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast Audio, which have long since been discontinued and were becoming all but forgotten.

On the official Google Help site “Streaming Help,” the release notes for the new firmware update rolled out in 2025 for Chromecast (2nd Gen), Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast Audio were published on the “Chromecast & Google TV Streamer firmware versions and release notes” page, dated Monday, November 24, 2025. The updates for each device consist only of bug fixes and improvements, with no new features or Android security patch level updates included.

While the exact release date of the new firmware update is unclear, based on past information, it is known to have been rolled out sometime around February to March 2025. The post-update build numbers are “Build number: 1.56.467165” for Chromecast (2nd Gen), “Build number: 1.56.469779” for Chromecast Ultra, and “Build number: 1.56.467166” for Chromecast Audio.

Chromecast (2nd Gen), Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast Audio November 2025 Firmware Update

Firmware updates for Chromecast (2nd Gen), Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast Audio had not been released for a long time since the last one on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, about two years ago. But now, after roughly two years, a new firmware update has arrived. What a surprise.

Incidentally, while support for the Chromecast series ended for the original Chromecast in late April 2023, the end of support for other models has not yet been announced. That said, it appears the Chromecast (3rd Gen) has not received this latest firmware update.
