In March 2024, about a year and a half ago, a new “Security” settings category was introduced to the Android app for Google’s mobile payment service, “Google Wallet.” This new category includes “Verification settings,” which let you decide whether verification is required when using credit cards or passes registered in Google Wallet.
Within this new “Security” category’s “Verification settings,” there are separate settings for “Transit cards” and “Credit or debit cards” registered in Google Wallet. For example, for “Credit or debit cards,” you can set whether verification (unlock authentication) is required for payments, such as when paying for train or bus fares, using the “Verification required” setting. Turning it ON requires verification, while turning it OFF makes it unnecessary.
Meanwhile, the “Transit cards” setting was initially intended mainly for international use. Transit passes using NFC (Type-A/B) would appear in the “Transit cards” settings when registered in Google Wallet.

However, in early November 2025, this “Transit cards” setting appears to have added support for Japan’s transit IC services, “Suica” and “PASMO.” “Suica” and “PASMO” cards registered in Google Wallet now appear under the “Transit cards” settings.

However, even though “Suica” and “PASMO” now appear in the “Transit cards” settings of the Android Google Wallet app, you can’t actually configure anything. Since verification is not required to ride trains or buses with these cards in the first place, the setting simply displays the message, “This card doesn’t require verification.”
This is simply a case of the “Verification settings” and “Transit payments” settings, added to the Android Google Wallet app back in March 2024, now being able to recognize “Suica” and “PASMO.” In short, it’s just an advancement in the localization of the Android Google Wallet app’s settings. In other words, Japan’s unique “Suica” and “PASMO” cards, which were previously not recognized under the “Transit cards” setting, are now correctly identified as such.
