New E-money

The Japanese version of Google Wallet currently supports two transit IC services: “Suica” and “PASMO.”

However, the possibility has emerged that it will also support seven new transit IC services: “ICOCA” from JR West, “TOICA” from JR Central, “Kitaca” from JR Hokkaido, “nimoca” from Nimoca Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of Nishi-Nippon Railroad), “SUGOCA” from JR Kyushu, “manaca” from Nagoya Transportation Development Organization & MIC, and “hayakaken” from Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau. This means the Japanese version of Google Wallet could potentially support a total of nine transit IC services.

However, there have been some developments, such as “nimoca” being temporarily removed.

New ‘E-wallet’ Section

Three new services are expected to be supported by the Japanese version of Google Wallet: “PayPay Money (verified account balance),” “au PAY Prepaid Card,” and “d Payment (Docomo account linked type).”

These are expected to be NFC payments utilizing NFC (Type-A/B). These NFC payment services—”PayPay Money (verified account balance),” “au PAY Prepaid Card,” and “d Payment (Docomo account linked type)”—are planned to be supported under a new “E-wallet” section in the Japanese version of Google Wallet.

New Prepaid Cards

Three new prepaid cards have emerged as new variations of payment cards to be supported by the Japanese version of Google Wallet in the future: “Visa Prepaid,” “au PAY Prepaid Card,” and “d CARD PREPAID.”

Bank Account Linking

In addition to the “E-wallet,” another new feature expected to be supported by the Japanese version of Google Wallet is bank account linking.

The banks currently listed are MUFG Bank, Mizuho Bank, Japan Post Bank, and Rakuten Bank. It’s possible that this feature will support not only topping up the “E-wallet” but also peer-to-peer money transfers.

Cryptocurrency Wallet Integration

Another new feature expected to be supported by the Japanese version of Google Wallet is cryptocurrency wallet integration.

At this moment, integration with “Rakuten Wallet,” a cryptocurrency exchange registered with the Financial Services Agency and part of the Rakuten Group, has surfaced. However, the specific functions of this cryptocurrency wallet integration are unknown.

It is currently unclear whether the cryptocurrency wallet integration will be limited to just a cryptocurrency management service or if it will also support features like topping up the “E-wallet.” Furthermore, it is also unknown at this time whether there will be integration with cryptocurrency exchanges other than “Rakuten Wallet.”
