Recently, I reported on the possibility of three e-money services—JR West’s “ICOCA,” JR Central’s “TOICA,” and PayPay Corporation’s rechargeable “PayPay Money”—becoming supported by “Google Pay,” the cashless payment feature of the Android digital wallet service “Google Wallet.” Now, it has been discovered that further preparations are underway for the integration of domestic Japanese cashless payment services.
This involves the integration of three cashless payment services: KDDI’s “au PAY (au PAY Prepaid Card),” NTT DOCOMO’s “d-payment,” and Rakuten’s “Rakuten Pay.” It appears that these three, along with the SoftBank-affiliated “PayPay Money,” will be integrated into Google Wallet under the “e-wallet” category.
As with the previous discovery, this information was found by analyzing the HTML code of the official Google Wallet Help site’s “Check supported payment methods (Japan)” page. Hidden HTML code revealed information about the integration of the four payment services—”PayPay Money,” “au PAY,” “d-payment,” and “Rakuten Pay.” However, all that is currently known is that these four services will be integrated into Google Wallet under the “e-wallet” category; the specific details of its implementation remain unclear.

The hope is that this integration will be more than just a way to display each service’s QR code through Google Wallet, and will instead support contactless tap-to-pay via NFC (Type-A/B) or perhaps through the FeliCa-based payment systems like “Suica,” “iD,” “QUICPay,” “Rakuten Edy,” “nanaco,” or “WAON.” In other words, it is expected that PayPay Money, au PAY, d-payment, and Rakuten Pay, once integrated into Google Wallet, will become available for use with tap-to-pay.
Incidentally, “d-payment” already offers “d-payment Touch,” which allows users to register a virtual card issued in the “d-payment” app to Google Wallet and use it for tap-to-pay via “iD.” It is hoped that the newly discovered integration of “PayPay Money,” “au PAY,” “d-payment,” and “Rakuten Pay” will feature a different, more streamlined implementation—for example, one that eliminates intermediate steps like issuing a virtual card.
Along with this, support for the Wear OS version of the Google Wallet app is, of course, also highly anticipated.
