On Thursday, October 2, 2025, Google began rolling out the next generation of “Take a Message,” a voicemail feature in the default “Phone by Google” app available for Google Pixel devices since the Pixel 4. This new version, powered by on-device AI (Gemini Nano), is being launched for the new generation of Google Pixel devices: the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
The “Take a Message” feature in the “Phone by Google” app is a voicemail function that prompts callers to leave a voice message for missed or rejected calls. Messages recorded with “Take a Message” are saved on the Google Pixel device and are also transcribed, allowing you to review the voice message as text.
Additionally, “Take a Message” in the “Phone by Google” app includes a feature to detect spam calls from voice messages recorded for missed or rejected calls from numbers not in your contacts.
Now, this “Take a Message” feature in the “Phone by Google” app has evolved into a next-generation function for the new Google Pixel devices—Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold—utilizing on-device AI (Gemini Nano). On the Pixel 10 series, “Take a Message” integrates a spam detection model similar to “Call Screen,” which determines if an incoming call is spam based on the recorded voice message and automatically blocks it if it is.
Furthermore, voice messages from “Take a Message” are transcribed in real-time and are also summarized by AI, similar to “Call Notes.” In other words, “Take a Message” for the new generation of Google Pixel devices—Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold—becomes a next-generation feature that integrates the spam detection model of “Call Screen” and the AI summarization of “Call Notes.”
However, the “Take a Message” voicemail feature in the “Phone by Google” app is only available in four countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland. It has not yet been rolled out in Japan.
