On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Google updated its “Google System Release Notes” for the September 2025 “Google System Updates,” which includes new features to enhance the security and reliability of Android-related devices. Within these notes, Google announced an upgraded sync setting for Google Contacts as a new feature for Android.
With this upgraded sync setting for Google Contacts being rolled out as a new feature for Android, the setting previously known as “Device contacts (Also sync device contacts)” will now be deployed as “Device and SIM contacts (Also sync device and SIM contacts).” In other words, this is an upgrade from the setting that previously only synced contacts stored on the device to a setting that now also allows syncing contact information stored on the SIM card itself to Google Contacts.
This upgraded sync setting for Google Contacts will be rolled out with the “Google Play Services” app for Android, version 25.38 and later. The actual Google Contacts sync setting is located within “Google Services” in the Android settings, under “Google Contacts sync.”

Having said all that, it’s now common to use cloud sync services like Google Contacts, and the practice of saving contact information to a SIM card has largely disappeared. Therefore, this isn’t as much of an “upgrade” as it might sound.
